NUROKOR MITOUCH

The NuroKor mitouch is a bioelectronic device designed to aid with pain reduction, pain control, inflammation and recovery after an injury and post-exercise; it can also be used for muscle training.

It’s a hand-held device the size of a smartphone that is programmed with software that delivers three different types of bioelectrical formulations through the skin: MC2 (the world’s first QuadWave sequential microcurrent treatment), NMS (neuromuscular stimulation) and PNS (peripheral nerve stimulation).

I’m not going to go into detail about what all that means (mainly because I don’t really understand it) but it’s a technique that is used by doctors, physiotherapists and pro athletes to both control pain and aid recovery and muscle development.

GB team skier Charlie Guest uses the device, for instance, and finds that it’s perfect for recovery on the move: “We have competitions and training all over the world, so being able to get recovery in on the move is a massive advantage. NuroKor allows me to be recovering in the best way possible between one mountain and the next”.

The device delivers gentle bioelectrical formulations via electrode pads that attach to the body area or muscles you wish to target – you can control the level of the impulses (in fact you don’t even feel them in the MC2 mode) and how long the device operates for (up to an hour, after which it automatically shuts down), put it into ‘lock’ mode and, with the mitouch in a pocket you can pretty much carry on with any normal activity (it can even be used when training to help with muscle enhancement).

The big question, of course, is “Does it work?”

Well, I got my hands on one after suffering a seemingly minor lower back injury that had prevented me from skiing for over two weeks and simply wasn’t getting any better despite using all the usual recovery methods – physiotherapy, ice, heat, stretching, painkillers and anti-inflammatories.

I tried the pain relief mode at first, then moved on to MC2 recovery mode – apart from the minor faff of attaching the electrode pads the whole thing was as easy to use as my phone (in fact I have it on now as I’m writing this).

There was no obvious immediate effect (although apparently this can be the case for some people), but after two days of using the mitouch two or three times a day, things seemed to definitely be improving (I was also continuing with the heat application and stretching).

I’m now five days in and am seriously considering hitting the slopes again tomorrow – virtually all of the stiffness and pain I was feeling a few days ago has gone, and whilst this was obviously nothing like a clinically controlled trial so I can’t be sure just how much of this is due to the mitouch device, I’ll certainly be keeping it to hand in case the problem flares up again.

Sure, it’s not cheap, but if you’ve gone through days or weeks of chronic pain, the sheer relief of having it clear up – and be able to get back on your skis, bike, whatever again – will seem well worth the cost.
